Les Plewa

Mr. Plewa was born and raised on the southwest side of Chicago in the Archer Heights neighborhood. He received his first degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and his secondary education certification through Northeastern Illinois University. In 2013, he became a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT). This certification is recognized in 50 states.
Prior to teaching, Mr. Plewa served in the United States Marine Corps. In addition, he has been employed in the public and private sectors; working for the City of Chicago and a major United States corporation. In 2014-2105, he worked as a mentor for the Chicago Teachers Union Nurturing Teacher Leadership program. As a mentor, he was an adviser for teachers working on obtaining their National Board Certification. Most recently, one his teaching videos is being used by the ATLAS(Accomplished Teaching, Learning and Schools) program to provide exemplary teaching to new and aspiring teachers.
Mr. Plewa has been actively engaged in politics since he was a young boy when he attended his first Solidarnosc rally in Chicago. Throughout his life, he has been involved in various political campaigns and activism. Mr. Plewa has served his community in a variety of ways: President and Vice-president of the Archer Heights Civic Association and Community Representative on the Curie Local School Council. Currently, he serves as the teacher representative on the Taft Local School Council. He believes civic participation is the essential ingredient in a democratic republic.
Mr. Plewa has taught a variety of classes at Taft. He has taught United States History, Contemporary American History, World Studies, and Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID). Currently, he is teaching Advanced Placement World Studies(APWH) for diploma bound students and World Geography as an elective course. Furthermore, he was the Boys Sophomore Soccer Coach and the Girls Junior Varsity Soccer Coach. In the past, he has chaperoned ten juniors to Washington D.C. through the Close-Up program. Last year, he was the teacher sponsor for Albanian Club.
