Les Plewa

Mr. Plewa was born and raised on the southwest side of Chicago in the Archer Heights neighborhood. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago and his secondary education certification through Northeastern Illinois University. In 2013, he became a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT). This certification is the most prestigious in education and recognized in 50 states. In 2017, he received his Master of Science in Education, with a concentration in Teaching and Learning from the University of
St. Francis.
Prior to teaching, Mr. Plewa served in the United States Marine Corps. In addition, he has been employed in the public and private sectors; working for the City of Chicago and a major United States corporation. Currently, he is also working as a mentor for the Chicago Teachers Union Nurturing Teacher Leadership program. As a mentor, he provides professional development for teachers working on obtaining their National Board certification. One of his teaching videos is being used by the ATLAS(Accomplished Teaching, Learning and Schools) program which provides examples of exemplary teaching to new and aspiring teachers. In the summer of 2017, he was hired by National Boards to score teacher portfolios. Recently, he was nominated and confirmed to serve as a teacher representative at the University of Chicago Consortium on School Research.
Mr. Plewa has been actively engaged in politics since he was a young boy when he attended his first Solidarnosc rally in Chicago. Throughout his life, he has been involved in various political campaigns and activism. Mr. Plewa has served his community in a variety of ways: President and Vice-president of the Archer Heights Civic Association and Community Representative on the Curie Local School Council. He served as the teacher representative on the Taft Local School Council. Currently, he serves as a delegate to Chicago Teachers Union. Mr. Plewa believes civic participation is the essential ingredient in a democratic republic.
Mr. Plewa has taught a variety of classes at Taft. He has taught United States History, Contemporary American History, World Studies, Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), and Advanced Placement World Studies(APWH). Currently, he is teaching Advanced Placement Government & Politics to diploma bound students and World Studies. Furthermore, years back he was the Boys Sophomore Soccer Coach and the Girls Junior Varsity Soccer Coach. In the past, he has also chaperoned ten juniors to Washington D.C. through the Close-Up program. He was the founding sponsor of Albanian Club and has sponsored a variety of clubs.
As a teacher, Mr. Plewa seeks to prepare his students for whatever path in life they choose: higher education, career, and/or the workforce.
Lastly, as a human being, Mr. Plewa works to ensure that he provides each individual the opportunity, access, and empathy to grow to be a better person.
